A company approached us at ELMG to design a non security alarm system that could be monitored via the telephone system. We asked about target markets, product volumes and how the alarm monitoring would be done.
As we explored this two business issues became clear to us at ELMG. The first was that the product would be sold in a number countries each with their own telephone connection standards and certification requirements. The second was that any system for monitoring needed to leverage the security alarm industry from day one to avoid legacy product support requirements that could constrain growth. We investigated, designed and developed a telephone line interface that would meet the various requirements including those from UL and CE. In this process we looked at telephone line interface standards from around the world and also designed to IEC60950 and UL60950. We also introduced the client to the security alarm industry, investigated the security alarm industry's communication standards and came up with low build cost solution with enough flexibility to fit all the international target markets. The key accomplishment was developing with the client a business and technology roadmap that would work, along with using the go to market planning to guide development of technology that fitted with the business.

Moving up in voltage always brings difficulties in design and testing. Previous ELMG experience and expertise allowed the client to generate new competence in their R and D group. Areas that required careful management included increasing the level of care to that needed at medium voltage by educating and training the company.
In risk management terms this project presented a number of issues. These were a mix of technical and people risks. ELMG helped identify, communicate and manage the technical risk by using FMEA and financial forecasting to quantify the risk with financial information. People specific risk was managed by targeted training.
